COVID-19 Update

In light of the broad scale impact of COVID-19, the UMPT program has modified the application requirements for the 2020-2021 cycle. We hope that these adaptations are helpful to our applicants during these difficult times.
  • All CR/NCR grading will be accepted for courses taken during the Spring 2020 semester.
  • Accepted GRE scores will include exams taken as late at November 30, 2020.
  • Our inpatient observation hour requirement will be waived for the 2020-2021 application cycle.
    • Applicants who do have any opportunity to complete their 16 hours of inpatient observation should submit their verifications on PTCAS, as directed in the application. However, these hours are not required.
  • Despite waiving the inpatient observation requirement, applicants need a total of 80 observation hours within at least 2 different settings, with a minimum of 16 hours in each.

Update: September 28, 2020

Many healthcare settings have placed COVID restrictions on student observation and shadowing. For this reason, the University of Montana DPT Program is making the following changes for the 2020-21 cycle: 

  • Reference Requirements: 3 letters of professional recommendation are required, but there is no longer the requirement that one must be from a PT. We strongly encourage you to obtain a letter from a PT when possible, but will accept reference letters from other professional individuals who are able to speak to your character, work ethic and professionalism (e.g. Professor, Supervisor/Employer, Co-Worker, Academic, Teaching Assistant, PTA, Pre-PT Advisor, or Health Care Professional).
  • PT Observation Hours: We continue to believe that any experience working, volunteering, or observing PTs will provide exposure that will enhance the depth and breadth of understanding of PT practice; however, PT observation hours will not be scored against you when assessing your application due to lack of availability.  If you have not been able to interact with a PT and observe PT practice, we strongly recommend you find other ways to educate yourself regarding the field of physical therapy.

Program Information

The School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science offers a 33-month entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.  This degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).  The UM Physical Therapy Clinic houses UMPT Sports and Orthopedics, UMPT Neurological and Mobility Impairments, and the New Directions Wellness Center, which provides fitness and wellness services for people with physical limitations or disabilities and are integral to the mission of the School.  Ongoing research efforts within the School include initiatives in the Applied Exercise Physiology, Movement Science and Motor Control laboratories.


University of Montana School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science Mission Statement

The Physical Therapy Educational Program at the University of Montana has the primary mission of educating students to become proficient entry level physical therapists who practice as effective members of health care teams to serve people across the lifespan. To this end, students are prepared to become providers of patient care and to fulfill the entry-level roles of administration, supervision, instruction, scholarship/research, and consultation. Graduates will demonstrate analytical thinking, reflective reasoning, and a broad base of professional knowledge and skills consistent with autonomous practice. Graduates will use effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills and apply the results of scientific research, clinical expertise, and patient values in their professional practice. The academic and clinical faculty will foster humaneness and compassion, professional and ethical behaviors, life-long learning, and cultural sensitivity.  The faculty will provide service and leadership to the physical therapy profession at the University, State, National, and International levels. The clinical and scientific base of physical therapy and medical knowledge will be enhanced through creative and scholarly activities.
