Panhandle Health District Practicum Opportunity

The Panhandle Health District in Hayden, Idaho, has recently been gifted with funding to use toward an open-ended, community-centered cancer prevention promotion in the five counties we serve: Benewah County, Bonner County, Boundary County, Kootenai County, and Shoshone County. We are beginning our program by doing research, and we have already begun interviewing target populations and stakeholders. Our next step is to continue conducting qualitative research to get a better understanding of the situation, needs, and barriers to service and knowledge, with regard to cancer and cancer prevention in the communities that we serve. We are in need of an outstanding MPH student who will be paired with a local Bachelor’s of Health Promotion and Education student to plan and continue this research process.

The students will, in large part, be choosing a research methodology, planning, and carrying out the research. They will be working under the direct supervision of myself. The students will have primary authorship on the research, should they decide to publish the results. We are also planning to provide monthly compensation of at least $500.00, paid directly to the MPH student, for travel, etc.

The student will need to be in or travel to the Panhandle area for much of the time, which is an important factor to keep in mind. The internship hours can be tailored to be flexible for the student and can last anywhere from a few months to a year, depending upon ours and the student’s needs.

I think that this might be of interest to U of M Students and could be a wonderful opportunity for the right individual. We would like to begin in January 2016.
