Personal Summary

Coille was born and raised in northwestern Montana.  She graduated from the University of Montana and attended graduate school at the University of Arizona-Tucson, where she received an M.S. in Speech and Hearing Science.  During her graduate work, she specialized her studies and clinical practicum experiences to receive additional training in working with clients who are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing.  She was also awarded a research assistantship for The Child Language Laboratory, studying children with speech-language impairment (SLI).  Coille completed a Clinical Fellowship Year as a speech-language pathologist and aural rehabilitation specialist at Boys Town National Research Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She continued working there for over 25 years in various roles including evaluating and providing services to infants, children and adults who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing or with other communication challenges, with specialties in early intervention, family-centered practice and cochlear implants. She also was a research team member in the Infant Laboratory, under the tutelage of Mary Pat Moeller, Ph.D.  where she studied speech-language development and mother-child interactions of children 4 months to 5 years of age. Coille returned to the University of Montana to serve in the role of Coordinator of Language Learning Essentials for Academic Development, directed by Julie A. Wolter, PhD, studying how language influences the ability to read and write in school-age children with and without deficits in of language and literacy.  She is also a Clinical Educator, supervising graduate students at the DeWitt Rite Care Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic and Course Instructor within the School of Speech, Language, Hearing and Occupational Sciences. She has professional passions for studying students with DLD (Developmental Language Disorder), aural (re)habilitation, early intervention and developing and mentoring and educating aspiring speech-language pathologists and speech-language pathology assistants in the classroom and clinic.

Professional Experience

University of Montana, Missoula, MT (October, 2019 to present)

Coordinator, Language and Learning Essentiasl for Academic Development Lab

Coordinate data collection in 9 public schools for language and literacy classroom screenings for kindergarteners; Coordinate and administer follow-up data collection sessions for children identified at risk for developmental language disorder (DLD). Develop protocols for training of assessments and laboratory tasks. Manage graduate and undergraduate student research assistants performing data collection and analysis for longitudinal study.  Committee Member for Master’s Theses.  Mentor for graduate student poster presentations for University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR).

            Speech-Language Pathologist (September, 1991 - 2019)

·       Speech-Language Clinical Services: (1991-2008; 2012-2019) Conduct speech-language evaluations and provide therapy services for clients with normal hearing ages 2 to 18 years with a variety of communication needs, including language and articulation disorders, apraxia, stuttering and autism spectrum disorders.  Conduct communication evaluations, counsel parents about the process of learning to listen, provide follow-up evaluations for clients, age 1 through adults, and collaborate with members of the cochlear implant team to determine candidacy for cochlear implants. 

·       Research Assistant (2004-2013): Contribute to two longitudinal research project grants. Infant Development Laboratory, Boys Town National Research Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska, Mary Pat Moeller, Ph.D., Primary Investigator.  Administer speech and language assessments with children from 4 months to 5 years of age.  Live transcription, provide parent feedback language sample analysis, develop coding strategies for maternal input and child responses, assist with preparation of manuscripts, oral and poster presentations.

·       Parent Infant Specialist- Deaf/Hard of Hearing (2001-2008; 2012-2019): Design dynamic, family-centered speech, language and listening intervention for families from diverse backgrounds.  Provide coaching on speech, language and listening development, use and maintenance of amplification, and intervention techniques.  Develop strength based IFSP/IEP documents and make community referrals as a case coordinator.

·       Speech Language Pathologist – Preschool Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (1991-1999): Provide comprehensive speech/language/auditory services for preschoolers age 3-5, including assessments, IEP development, individual, small group therapy, and classroom collaboration targeting IEP goals and objectives. 

·       Speech Language Pathologist – Suburban Program for the Hearing-Impaired (1997-2001): Provide contract services for speech/language/auditory assessments, IEP development, individual, small group therapy and classroom collaboration targeting IEP goals and objectives for students grades K-12, in 3 school locations.
