Description

Tobin Miller Shearer, Ph.D., and Theresa Floyd, Ph.D., from the University of Montana are offering a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training event designed specifically for public health professionals.  The eight-hour DEI training is designed to introduce public health professionals to DEI theory and practices. The two 4-hour sessions will present participants with key concepts and methods for effective promotion and development of DEI principles in the public health workplace. Participants will finish the course sequence with an introductory awareness of gender, race, and privilege as well as proven methods for implementing DEI principles in public health and business settings to effect substantive change. Specific resources will include field-tested analysis, real-world applications, and research-based principles and guidelines.

Learning Objectives:

Day 1 Objectives: Tuesday May 17th, 1-5pm, Session 1: Dismantling Racism: from Theory to Practice

Upon completing this 4-hour session, participants will be able to:

  • articulate the history and development of race as a biological myth and social reality
  • identify the primary historical stages in the development of institutional racism and white privilege in the United States
  • describe the impact of racial formation in the United States on internalized notions of superiority and inferiority
  • identify their own implicit racial biases and describe the phenomenon of implicit racial bias in society
  • apply a tripartite theory of systemic racism to contemporary and institutional expressions of racial diversity
  • differentiate between and among the various expressions of racism, including but not limited to the primary differences between white nationalism and white superiority
  • assess multiple efforts to dismantle racism in primarily white institutions

Day 2 Objectives Friday May 20th 9-1pm, Session 2: The Inclusive Organization

Upon completing this 4-hour session, participants will be able to:

  • describe the current state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare and business organizations
  • articulate why healthcare professionals should be concerned about the current state
  • identify main causes of the lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion and explain how those causes limit career opportunities for marginalized groups
  • describe and assess potential solutions that have been proposed to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizations
  • determine which solutions they believe are most effective, and articulate reasons for their determinations
  • apply solutions to real-life work situations

Tobin Miller Shearer

Tobin Miller Shearer is a History Professor and Director of African-American Studies at the University of Montana. He also brings thirty years' experience working as an antiracism educator and organizer. In addition to teaching, Dr. Miller Shearer is the author of six books and more than one hundred articles and essays; he also enjoys baking pies for his students, friends, and family.

Theresa Floyd

Theresa Floyd teaches undergraduate, graduate, and executive education courses in the University of Montana College of Business. Her teaching areas include business management, human resource management, conflict management, and diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizations. She loves bringing her business experience and research to her teaching and has a passion for preparing her students for successful careers.
